What Linear Distortions & Grizzlies Have in Common

What do salmon and packets have in common? They both know the struggle of swimming upstream. A clean upstream is more critical than ever to ensuring proper performance of the state-of-the-art DOCSIS-based platforms being deployed by MSOs (and the health of the salmon population). Where the salmon face off against dams and grizzly bears, upstream packets in the network are foiled by impairments that cause linear distortions.

Micro-reflections can degrade service by wrecking ICFR (in-channel frequency response) and causing amplitude/group delay ripples. If ICFR or ripples exceed the manufacturer’s specified range for a piece of CPE, that equipment simply will not perform to specification—likely prompting a truck roll.

Chasing these linear distortions is difficult without the proper equipment. The PNM platforms that some MSOs have rolled out are a good tool for this. To speed up the hunt, Trilithic has another weapon for your arsenal: UP LD.

The UP LD option for Trilithic’s DSP series of installation, service, and maintenance meters is a time-saving tool that allows techs to track and verify upstream signal quality–with visibility of ICFR, ripple, and group delay–on a meter whose internal DOCSIS modem loads faster than most test modems. Its like having TV cameras in the stream to watch for dams and grizzly bears, so they can be cleared before the salmon get there.
